Santa dropped in for a surprise visit at Rudheath Primary School to deliver 275 high visibility walking vests to the children, which have been provided by Roberts Bakery. And although very busy at the moment, Santa took time out of his hectic schedule to meet the children and give them a special bag of yummy Christmas biscuits from Roberts.

Roberts has supplied 275 vests to the school, which is just across the road from the bakery. The fluorescent vests are designed to make the children much more visible and improve their safety when out of school. The children will wear the vests for the first time when they walk to St Helen’s Church for a Christmas carol service on Monday 19 December.

Rudheath Primary pupils have been learning all about road safety and to remind them to be alert at all times, the vests have the message ‘stop, look, listen’ printed on the back of them.

Deputy Headteacher Laura Knight, said: “We are delighted to have these fantastic new vests from Roberts which will really help to improve the safety of our children when out and about. And it was even better that Santa himself had time to bring them in along with a sack full of delicious goodies from Roberts. It was such a special treat for the children and definitely added to the excitement of Christmas for them.”

Following the success of our recent charity ball, held in aid of The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Appeal, we’re delighted to announce that the money raised on the night has been put straight to good use and will help to fund a major study in to genetic factors that could cause breast cancer.

The ball, which was held at Cranage Hall in Holmes Chapel in September, raised £23,000 for Genesis, the only charity in the UK entirely dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer. The money will fund the first year’s work of PhD researcher Franchesca Gifford and provide state-of-the-art PCR equipment for the study into genetic variants and breast density. These are both believed to be factors that can cause breast cancer.

Lindsay Occleston Roberts of Roberts Bakery visited the Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester to hear about the pioneering study and meet Franchesca Gifford and Genesis chairman and consultant surgeon Lester Barr. The Genesis study aims to determine if there is a link between genetic variants, known as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), and breast density. In future, testing for these SNPs may become a useful means of predicting which women are at a high risk of developing the disease, potentially saving thousands of lives every year.

The three year study, which will be undertaken at the School of Biomedicine at the University of Manchester, involves 10,000 women who have undergone mammography as part of the National Breast Screening Programme and 1,500 women with a family history of breast cancer. It will use saliva samples from the women in combination with mammographic density data and clinical risk factor data to work out which genetic variants are linked to breast tissue density and breast cancer.

Lindsay Occleston Roberts added: “I am absolutely delighted that the proceeds from the ball have contributed towards such a vital and groundbreaking piece of research. I myself was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, so I am extremely enthusiastic about this study which has the potential to predict risk and help many thousands of women avoid this awful disease in the future.”

Organised to coincide with National Adoption Week, this year’s events have been supported by Roberts Bakery who provided plenty of toast!

Highlights of the campaign included students at Manchester University holding an Anglo-Chinese breakfast introducing fellow students to different breakfast options including dim sum and Green Tea and Becky Sim’s breakfast where she cooked breakfast for over 40 of her friends to raise money for the charity. Staff at the charity’s offices in Manchester and Liverpool also took part.

Sophie Cunningham, Senior Fundraiser at After Adoption, said “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it highlights the value of a loving family unit. It’s great for people to enjoy a variety of breakfasts and raise vital funds for us at the same time to help us with the work that we do.

“We’d like to thank everyone who got involved as the money raised will allow After Adoption to continue to provide care and support to all those affected by adoption, from finding families for children to offering help to birth parents and adoptive parents.”

After a wonderful night at Cranage Hall back in September, we are delighted to confirm that the final figure raised for the Genesis Appeal by Roberts Bakery, and our very generous supporters at the ball, is a staggering £23,000.

The charity is the only one in the UK entirely dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer, a cause which is very close to our hearts since Lindsay was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009.

Handing over the cheque on stage, at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester, to Genesis trustee, Pam Glass, Lindsay said, “We are thrilled to have raised this money for Genesis and hope it can be used to help your pioneering research into understanding and preventing this disease.”

We are now working closely the charity to put this money to good use straight away and will report back soon on how it is being spent.

During the Ladies Lunch, not only were we entertained by the delightful Cole Page and inspired by The Green Goddess herself, Diana Moran, but there was a very special surprise appearance from none other than Cliff Richard! Cliff was staying in the hotel and, after hearing the chatter of 220 ladies lunching, popped in to lend his support to the fight to make 1 in ten, none in 10.

Roberts was delighted to fund the mobile classroom’s three day visit on behalf of the school, which is just across the road from the bakery and has educated many people connected to the bakery over the years. The state of the art mobile classroom helps children by taking their learning into a different environment and teacher Alex Abberton, togetherwith the help of Harold the Giraffe, teach the pupils from a young age about the benefits of getting enough sleep, which foods are good from them, and how to cope with peer pressure.

Mike Roberts from Roberts Bakery said: “It’s fantastic to help the pupils of Rudheath Primary, some of whom are the children of our staff, to benefit from a vital resource like the Life Education classroom.”

Jean Dobson, teacher at Rudheath Community Primary School, said: “Health and wellbeing are essential to every one of our pupils, now and for the rest of their lives. We are very grateful to Roberts for funding this visit by Life Education to help get this message across to them in an enjoyable and interactive way.”

Coram Life Education is the UK’s largest health education charity and annually visits one million children in 4,000 schools throughout the country.

With the help of over 250 guests, the event raised more than £21,000 for Genesis, which is the only charity in the UK entirely dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer.

Gordon Burns, co-presenter of the BBC regional news programme North West Tonight joined guests for the evening and invited Lindsay Occleston Roberts and Genesis chairman and consultant surgeon Lester Barr, on to the stage for a brief TV style interview after guests had enjoyed their gourmet meal.

The meal was accompanied by a lively performance from renowned singer Cole Page who sang a medley of well-known swing hits and even had guests dancing on their chairs to his rendition of ‘That’s Amore’!

Our glamorous compere for the evening was the delightful TV and radio presenter Michelle Eagleton who is also the official presenter for the Genesis Appeal. Michelle, who looked stunning in a Yvonne Gillon gown, did a wonderful job highlighting the work of the charity and making sure the night ran smoothly.

Rick Dallimore from Meller Braggins hosted our grand auction, where the top lots included a beautiful Longines watch, donated by Alfred Jones Spar Group and PR Jones Jewellers, and a five day cruise around Croatia on board the luxury yacht Mystique. A disco and casino rounded off the entertainment on a very enjoyable evening with the winner on the casino tables scooping a fabulous week’s accommodation in a luxury villa in Tenerife.

Gordon Burns said: “I am a long-standing patron of The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Appeal and was delighted to lend my support to this ball. It was an absolutely fantastic evening, full of fun and entertainment, but it was also serious about raising money for a very worthwhile cause at the same time.”

Lindsay Occleston Roberts added: “Genesis is a charity that is very close to my heart after I myself was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. The evening was a huge success and I am very pleased that so many people came along and enjoyed it. We are thrilled with the amount of money raised, many thanks to everyone who supported us and bid so generously during the auctions.”

Their patron Matthew Kelly took the Daybreak cameras into the centre for the day to highlight the charity, and promote the ‘Donate a Day’ scheme to encourage people to volunteer. Dan Cundall, head of design at the centre, was working on our posters while the cameras were!

http://www.itv.com/daybreak/donate-a-day/matthew-kelly-donates-a-day/

As a major bread supplier to independent retailers, we often require lots of different price-point posters and shelf bakers for each store. Working closely with NMC we have created a template design which can be updated for each promotion and printed on the industry leading digital printers at the centre, giving us a high quality, professional finish.

“NMC Design + Print is a fantastic example of a local Social Enterprise and we’re delighted to be working with them, ” says Sarah Tipton, Marketing Executive at Roberts Bakery.

“First and foremost they provide a great service, with friendly staff, quick turnaround times and competitive prices. Knowing that their profits are invested straight back into the charity is an added bonus and complements the values of our charitable work.”
